Talented International Filipino Writer!

Hi there, I’m back to blogging now. Quite busy but I just want to write a simple article recognizing my very good friend, a mentor and somewhat an adviser/consultant in terms of filmmaking here in Mindanao, Gutierrez "Teng" Mangansakan II. Being the first representative from the southern Philippine island of Mindanao in the University of Iowa International Writing Program.

Teng is an essayist, screenwriter, fiction writer, poet, photographer, filmmaker, journalist, heritage conservationist, relief worker, editor, blogger, and a Muslim gay.

Teng belongs to Moro royalty, in a family that can trace its genetic heritage back to the Prophet through the sharif who first brought Islam to Mindanao -- but in college he underwent both political and artistic awakenings. The artistic awakening happened through a film festival in Manila, where he was exposed to the work of artists including Truffaut, Fellini and Ozu. "That really opened my eyes," he says. "So I shifted to communications, read everything I could find about films, and started writing."

Back in my college years, with my colleagues coi, sheng, mona and Sharon, as the micromedia production based from Mindanao have decided to feature teng’s passion in filmmaking. From his experiences itself, we’ve learned a lot. As we had the normal conversation together with the group, having simple drinks at the MTS (Matina Town Square), til the time we got drunk. Hehehe and sometimes end up with a great conversation about film. Teng would really want to help those who are in need, he would even share all the techniques and impart what he could confer to the young interested filmmakers. Read More!

Ito lang masasabi ko.

P.S. Pasalubong ko from San Francisco don’t forget! hehehe

Barack Obama, First US Black President

America's first black president, Barack Obama, was elected last Tuesday night in a historic triumph that overcame racial barriers as old as America itself.

The son of a black father from Kenya and a white mother from Kansas, the Democratic senator from Illinois sealed his victory by defeating Republican Sen. John McCain in a string of wins in hard-fought battleground states — Ohio, Florida, Virginia and Iowa.

A huge crowd in Grant Park in Chicago erupted in jubilation at the news of Obama's victory. Some wept.

McCain called his former rival to concede defeat — and the end of his own 10-year quest for the White House. "The American people have spoken, and spoken clearly," McCain told disappointed supporters in Arizona.

Obama and his running mate, Sen. Joseph Biden of Delaware, will take their oaths of office as the 44th president of the United States and vice president on Jan. 20, 2009.

Classical Pearl Jewel

In more recent times, the bracelets have become fashionable. While traditional charms hang from the bracelet, charms feature individual pieces soldered directly onto the link of the bracelet itself. A charm bracelet carries personal charms: decorative trinkets or pendants which are signs of important factors in the wearer’s life.

If you find a piece that makes you feel completely put-together and confident, wear it! And do keep it in mind that the achievement of a look depends on how you wear it. In fact, most people will agree that it's not the accessories that make the look, it's the way you hold yourself. And yes it is really true. The practice of wearing necklaces was once generally confined to women. But during the past couple of decades, increasing numbers of men have begun to take part in this practice.
However, the black pearl necklace is one of the easiest and most versatile accessories you can wear. It doesn't require any special holes in your body like earrings, it won't get in your way like a chunky bracelet will, and it doesn't have a stuffy connotation like a brooch as well as the akoya pearl necklace. Freshwater pearl necklace is the most classical among the jewels that makes you feel fresh and comfortable enough in wearing with your favorite fashion designed outfit. This combined with the wide range of necklace styles that are in vogue right now, means that you can find a necklace to go with any outfit, for any occasion. However, with every clothing store now featuring an accessory rack, choosing the right necklace for the right occasion can be intimidating. These types of classical pearl jewelries are available online with instant savings and other discounts.

For formal occasions and events most especially for feminine, a simple chain with a classical pearl or jeweled charm adds sparkle to any outfit. For a more relaxed, yet still dressy occasion, a funky, larger charm or statement piece will add some flair to your outfit.

Congratulations, DAVAO CITY!

After the whole week celebration of the Kadayawan 2008. The Davao City has preserved the peaceful and fruitful living despite the conflict on the nearby municipalities and cities. We must be very thankful to our Hon. Mayor Rody Roa Duterte for lending a voice of moderation in the on-going conflict in Mindanao. He was also elated that the Kadayawan festival last week went without a hitch. Thanks for the cooperation of all the people who celebrated with us. To the organizers and the participants of the yearly celebration of Davao City, “The Kadayawan”. To the thousands of police and other military who offered their time and efforts to keep the celebration going. Thank you very much! We made it safe and sound. Congratulations to us! we are all winners!

Chopsticks

It’s been almost a decade now when I was trying to eat foods through chopsticks. It was actually damn stupid tricky thing to do. It’s always been a trouble for me doing that kind of stuff. I couldn't eat delicious and tasty Asian cuisine comfortably. I would rather be using the spoon and fork to satisfy my tummy with those delicious foods. Eating chicken or beef wanton ball noodles, sushi and sashimi was really great since it requires an appropriate utensils to be used. So I managed to practice and enjoy gorging them with chopsticks! And those foods are seemed to taste better eaten with chopsticks, really! I’ve learned it on my own simple way by going to restaurants that specialized with chopsticks but it’s a lot more expensive since you need to spend money for it.

Talking about chopsticks, I know it’s kinda hard to learn at first. But as you go along and practice more often times, you will be enjoying and fascinated eating more foods using it. Here’s another chance of learning this techniques on how chopsticks use in proper way. There are some techniques being shown and instructed at Banzai. It’s a game where each player takes a Sushi Bowl, has a set of matching Betting Cards, with a pair of Chopsticks, a Hachimaki, and 25 pieces of Sushi. You will be challenged with the use of chopsticks transferring sushi into the bowl within 15 seconds. Try it! You will really enjoy! ScreenLife Games is at it again. They launched a new Banzai game. The Kadayawan 2008

The Kadayawan 2008 is a celebration of our indigenous cultures, food, arts, hobbies, past and present cultures. Kadayawan is dubbed as the festival of festivals. It’s a simple thanksgiving for a bountiful harvest. It evolved into one big party of parties, with the highlight on the diverse groups of Davaoeños. Expected are the streets parties, live bands, celebrities, Arts, Foods, sports, contests, and a lot more…

The Kadayawan 2008 celebration has two main components:

1. Lumadnong Kasaulogan(Indigenous Peoples Festival) - the core of the Kadayawan Festival showcasing our indigenous peoples’ culture and arts.

2. Subay sa Lumadnong Kagikan (Contemporary Indigenous-motivated Celebrations) - showcases the impact of the indigenous culture and traditions to contemporary artists and communities.

Theme of the year: "Musanay Lumadnong Kagikan, Yutang Kabilin Panalipdan!" (“Flourishing Indigenous Heritage, Protecting Ancestral Nations”)

Davao has been the Indigenous Peoples’ homeland, their core of existence. The life and culture of the indigenous peoples have always been bonded to the land. Without the land, culture and traditions are nothing. And there is always the need to defend the indigenous peoples’ ancestral lands for them to continually live and practice their way of life- consulting the spirits, working with nature and sharing with others. The main reason of celebrating the Kadayawan sa Dabaw 2008.

Watch out for this video introduction as an invitation to Kadayawan 2008. Inviting you all to join and celebrate with us!

My Look!

When I was still in grade school, my dad used to cut my hair in his very own style of haircut. Most of the time cutting it to what I really hate to have. He likes cutting my hair like a military hair style. I can still remember when he asked my sister to call me from playing outside and positioned the hair cutting at the balcony of the house. That was the time where I never had my Victory Hair under my dad’s regime. That was during my grade school. Until I reached high school and then college, I was able to have my own hairstyle without my dad’s consent. My dad has given me the freedom to have my own hairstyle.

Whatever hairstyle I wanted to have. But then later on, as I have noticed my look in front of the mirror, tsk tsk tsk! it has a unique look towards others (weeew!)Ü LOL! Trying to have those Extreme Style by VO5 just to impress my crushes.

Talking about what others use to call, the forms of non-verbal flirting. Victory Hair really helps a lot. Try and join this Ultimate Flirting Championship to have some techniques of some Victory Hairstyles.

Hanging Garden

Unexpectedly, I was able to watch this film just last Saturday. At first I never had the interest to really watch it, all I want that time was to sleep inside the cinema since it’s open to the public (free admission) so decided to spend my whole Saturday there. Sleeping and snoring inside the cinema(hahaha! sssshhh!)… when all of a sudden a very loud sound effect thudded within the four corner of the room. That was really weird! The sound awakens my soul while sleeping in the dark. And I look over the walls and I saw screenshots that catches my attention. And then I started to follow what was the story all about.

It was actually about this simple family that seems to be very happy living together but on the inside the reality is different. Having their rule that no one would hide any secrets from each other and yet each member has their own secrets. This film is a character driven drama pertaining to the story of a family struggling to find the way to happiness. It is alternatively funny, really touching and in some places quite frightening. It is also an exploration of the problems that plague a modern Japanese family, giving us a unique view that can be appreciated by those both within and outside of the Japan’s culture.

Hanging Garden is one of the three Japanese Film featured during the Japanese Film Festival screened last Friday and Saturday @ GS Citimall, Ilustre here in Davao.

The film ended with realization that opens the eyes of the people. I was touched! Another learning… another chance…

Multi-Grade

One, two, three… eight… nine… fifteen… twenty! Counting all the rivers we crossed during our documentary of the Multi-grade in a remote place of Liniputan Elementary School, located in Pantukan, Montevista, Davao del Norte. We took a total of 3 hours away from Davao City. 2 hours from Davao to Pantukan Division office of DepEd (by Pajero), and we took another car (I don’t know what car it was for mountain travel) for another 1 hour just to cross 20 rivers to reach Liniputan area (supposedly it’s 27 but we took the shortcut hehehe!). And man, believe me, Mountains bordered surround it and while rivers trapped around the small school for multi-grade levels.

We took footages while on our way. Flordy took photos while I was taking videos.

Multi-grade involves the teaching of children from two or more grade levels in one classroom. Such context requires the employment of particular teaching methodologies and classroom administration.

Since Multi-grade classes are smaller and can be established more cheaply than complete schools, they can be more numerous. Therefore, more dispersed and thus located closer to the settlements where the children live. The assigned teacher would really have to live near them, for it will take you 27 rivers to get there. LOL! The school happens to be located where it is bordered by rivers and it’s even kilometres away from urban. This means both that younger children can attend and spend travelling by crossing rivers everyday just to get into school. But for them attending school is therefore likely to be more acceptable to the families concerned, as improvement to each one another escalates. And thus both increase the number of children receiving education and reduce the failure rate.

Multi-grade schools, being smaller and more dispersed, teacher would enjoy much closer links with the smaller communities that they would be setting up to serve.

This would have a very positive effect on local attitudes and access to education.

This kind of job is not easy to do without putting your heart into it. Imagine yourself being isolated in one place in a remote and far-flung area, feels like being exiled. Isn’t it? A dedicated and committed being immersed herself into great sacrifice. She gave up everything, life in the city, friends and relatives, but because of love and perseverance in teaching to where her heart belongs to. Her passion in teaching multi-grade for nine (9) years leads her into a promotion for Principal and will be assigned to be the coordinator of Multi-grade in their division. Well, she deserved it! Congratulations to Ma’am Annabelle Isaac.
